How to Choose the Right Google Business Profile Category
One of the first decisions you make when setting up a Google Business Profile is choosing your business category.
It might seem like a small detail.
But your category helps Google understand what your business is and can influence which local searches your business is relevant to.
So how should you choose it?
Start with your primary category
Google recommends choosing the most specific primary category that represents what your business is, rather than simply what it sells or offers.
For example, a business that primarily operates as a dental clinic should choose an appropriate dental-related category rather than selecting a broader category simply because it contains a popular keyword.
Your primary category should describe the core identity of your business.
Don't choose a category just because you want to rank for it
This is an important distinction.
Your category isn't a list of keywords.
If you run a hair salon, you shouldn't select unrelated categories simply because you think they might help you appear for additional searches.
Google's guidelines state that categories should be representative of what the business is.
In other words:
Choose the category that accurately describes your business—not the category you wish your business could rank for.
What about additional categories?
Depending on the business, Google may allow additional categories.
These can be useful when a business genuinely provides multiple types of services or operates in more than one relevant business category.
But again, relevance is the key.
Adding unrelated categories can make your profile less accurate rather than more useful.
Your category isn't the only thing Google looks at
Choosing the right category is important, but it doesn't determine your entire local ranking.
Google says local results are primarily based on:
Relevance
Distance
Prominence
Other information about your business also helps Google understand whether your business is relevant to a particular search.
So changing your category alone isn't a magic solution for moving up Google Maps.
What if you aren't sure which category to choose?
Ask yourself:
What is the main type of business I operate?
What would a customer describe my business as?
Which category most accurately represents what I actually do?
You can also look at Google's available category options and choose the closest accurate match.
Don't choose a category simply because another business uses it.
Your business should be represented according to what it actually is.
Review your category when your business changes
Businesses sometimes evolve.
You might add a major new service, change your business model or expand into a different type of offering.
When that happens, it can be worth reviewing whether your Business Profile still accurately represents your business.
The goal is simple:
Make your Google Business Profile an accurate representation of your real business.
