How to Get More Genuine Google Reviews From Customers

Google reviews can play an important role in your online presence.

They help potential customers understand what other people think about your business, and Google states that reviews and positive ratings can contribute to local ranking through prominence.

But getting more reviews isn't about convincing customers to leave five stars.

It's about making it easy for genuine customers to share their experience.

Ask at the right time

Think about when your customer is most likely to be satisfied with your service.

For example, after:

  • A successful project

  • A completed appointment

  • A delivered service

  • A positive customer interaction

A simple request at the right moment can be much more natural than asking every customer immediately.

Make it easy

Customers are much less likely to leave a review if they have to search for your business themselves.

Google allows businesses to create and share a direct link that customers can use to leave a review.

You can share the link through appropriate channels such as:

  • Email

  • SMS

  • Receipts

  • Follow-up messages

The fewer steps the customer has to take, the easier it is for them to provide feedback.

Don't offer rewards for reviews

This is important.

You shouldn't offer customers discounts, money, gifts or other incentives in exchange for reviews.

Google's policies prohibit businesses from offering or accepting incentives in exchange for reviews.

The review should represent the customer's genuine experience.

Don't ask only for five-star reviews

There's a difference between asking for a review and asking for a positive review.

A good approach is simply:

“We'd appreciate it if you could share your experience on Google.”

This gives the customer freedom to provide their honest feedback.

Don't create fake reviews

Fake reviews can damage your reputation and violate Google's policies.

Reviews should come from people who have actually interacted with your business.

That means you shouldn't:

  • Write reviews for your own business

  • Ask friends or family who haven't been customers to review you

  • Buy reviews

  • Use review farms

  • Create multiple accounts to increase your review count

More reviews aren't useful if they don't represent real customer experiences.

What if you receive a negative review?

Don't panic.

A negative review doesn't automatically mean something has gone wrong with your Google Business Profile.

Consider responding professionally and addressing the customer's concerns where appropriate.

If a review violates Google's content policies, you can report it for removal. Google states that reviews aren't removed simply because a business disagrees with them.

Make reviews part of your customer process

Instead of treating reviews as a one-time campaign, build a simple process around them.

For example:

Complete service → Follow up → Share review link → Customer leaves genuine feedback

Over time, this can help your business build a larger body of authentic customer feedback.

And remember: the goal isn't simply to collect as many reviews as possible.

The goal is to make it easy for real customers to share real experiences.
